Rowan Ice Hockey would like to thank all their fans and supporters for their support throughout the year and wish everyone a safe summer. It has been a good year for the Profs as the team finished with a 10-6 record in the MACHA and 19-8-1-1 overall as well as being ranked #13 in the Southeast. As good of a season Rowan had, it is also a bittersweet moment for the graduating seniors who have been part of this program for the last four plus seasons. This year graduating seniors of Captain Fred Brewer and associate captains Joe DiScala and Chris Keyser will be missed on and off the ice. We would like to thank them for all their hard work and dedication and wish them good luck in their future endeavors.

2010 NJ Pond Hockey Classic

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="City"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="State"></o:smarttagtype>Rowan University Ice Hockey announced plans last month for the first outdoor game in ACHA history, scheduled for Saturday, January 9th, 2010 at the Navesink Country Club in Middletown, NJ.

The 2010 New Jersey Pond Hockey Classic will feature the host Rowan University Profs and the visiting UMBC Retrievers. After putting big numbers against Kutztown in their first game, the Profs put eight more against their cross state rivals in what ended up being a hard fought game. With alumni from the 1980's chanting on with fellow Rowan supporters as well as the pep band Rowan seemed determined to not repeat their mistakes from last year and dominated throughout. The start of the game was marked by the ceremonial puck drop by the President of Rowan University Dr. Donald Farish which was followed by some great action. TCNJ played well but it wasn't enough for the determined Profs as they went and out shot the Lions 50-27. Except for a few minor incidents, the overall outcome seemed pleasing to Rowan coaching staff. "We played hard tonight and kept moving the puck pretty well," associate head coach Mike Husek said. "We knew it was going to be a tough game but we made sure we went over the things to get past their two number one guys. And it worked." Next on the schedule is another league game against St. Joseph's University which is Sunday October 4 at 5:20 PM.

2009 Mini-Camp

The Rowan Ice Hockey 2009 Mini-Camp is scheduled to begin next week September 2nd with a start-off players meeting in Savitz Hall and continuing on through September 11th. According to the team, the facilities should be ready before the season begins in September and includes player's room, coaches offices, video feeds, equipment machines, and the regular amenities offered at any NCAA levels. "Having these kinds of facilities is a great step to where we want to be. Everyone is happy that we'll have access to a dedicated space away from everything and should make it easier for both the players and the coaches" mentioned assistant head coach Mike Husek. The locker room should be a great recruiting tool as the players won't have to keep their equipment in their dorms.

On another note, the team has also been able to secure their own Television feed through their website which will broadcast every home and away games.

Coach's Corner This Week

The holiday break has come to an end as we are prepping for our trip down south to Raleigh, NC. What I thought was going to be a respite from the cold NJ weather is just a 7 hour trip to the same weather. We have hit the ice for practices and have adjusted the roster and now are ready to board the bus. Canes Cup here we come!

We have also posted a new video from the 1st game of the season vs Seton Hall. The following link should get you to where you are going if you would like to see it: http://www.viddler.com/explore/johnnyc

Hopefully we will be able to upload some newer footage from the Canes Cup while we are in the Southland. After going O for October, November started out pretty well. A league matchup with number 10 ranked Rider looked to be a tough matchup and a good measuring stick. We put up 9 marks while only letting 2 get by us. The next two games we scored 13 goals an impressive offensive outburst. Unfortunately we let 20 get by us. Yes 20. We run and gun and open the offense, WIDE open, unfortunately our defense and goalie feel the pain. We are going to need to tighten it up some. More than likely it will bring down our offense but that will be ok if we can bring down the GAA as well.

We also played Liberty, the number 13th ranked team in the league. Another wide open affair. I don't think they were accustomed to such a style as ours, we put up 8 but surrendered 10 again. I thought we were going to come back and steal the game but a 5 minute major at the end of the game prevented the comeback. I thought the game was very entertaining with 18 goals scored and some huge hits and even a fight. If you were in the building you saw a fun one.

Next weekend is our last two games for November. We hit the road vs NYU and then return home to meet MACHA mates U Penn. This is our final home game for November and the last game to bring the non-perishable food items for the food bank. I can't thank everyone enough for their generosity this month in helping us help others.

See you on the pond.

Coach

Coach's Corner This Week

The season is now chugging along and we are still mired in a losing streak. Like every streak, winning or losing you manage to find ways to keep it going if you let it get into your head. When you're winning you can find ways to win when you shouldn't and vice-versa. The latter happened to us last week vs St Joe's. Last minute of play on a powerplay and an untimely turnover ended up in our net and we lost the game by one. Disappointing but not deadly. Thankfully, the hockey gods always provide us a clean sheet on the pond and a new day. We'll keep plugging along making some changes and tweaking the systems and line-up til we figure it out. Hard work pays off and I still believe we can get it turned around.

November brings along with it the holiday season. We will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to an area food bank. If you are planning on attending one of the home games please help us to help others.

See you on the pond

Coach

Coach's Blog This Week

Well the season has gotten underway in earnest. We have played 2 league games to this point and are preparing for another bus trip up the NJ Turnpike to visit Seton Hall. We played a tight game versus Southeast Regional qualifier UMBC but fell just short in the end. We played against William Patterson, another regional qualifier, and the game was tight coming down to us hitting a post late in the third. WPU held on to the game and we lost 5-4. Two losses to two top tier opponents, both closely matched. These games are good barometer to measure ourselves. They are also excellent lesson teachers. We fell into some PK trouble and we’ll adjust the coverage to improve. We also met Seton Hall in the season opener and in traditional Rowan Ice Hockey fashion defense was rare. The final was 10-6 in our favor.

Saturday October 4th we met with some men with whom we shared some common ground. These men all played ice hockey for the school as well. They played in the 1980s when the school was called Glassboro State. The event was about everything except the game. The entire day was spectacular with both the current team and the alumni thoroughly enjoying the time together. Their retro GSC jersey was replica of the 1931 Boston Bruins and they were beauties. The game was played with a lot of fun and ease that included nice goals and even a penalty shot. All thanks goes out to the Alumni for a great weekend of activities.

Check back to the website to see the pictures the Alumni celebration and more.
See you on the pond.
~Coach

New Alumni Page

Rowan has established a new Alumni page to recognize and salute the past players and members from the days of Glassboro State College onward. This is a great step forward for the whole organization as they keep moving ahead. The MACHA has released a statement:

---

The MACHA announced that, at their spring meeting, the membership have accepted both Rowan University and The College of New Jersey as probationary members. In another move, Princeton University will remain a part of the MACHA as an associate member team, meaning the Tigers will not be eligible for playoffs next season and will play only a limited schedule as they rebuild their program.

The addition of Rowan and TCNJ brings the MACHA membership back to 10 teams and adds clubs that will immediately compete for playoff spots.

"Adding these schools will give us two more quality programs that have been working hard the past few years to get to this level," MACHA President Les Schriber said. "They bring some great local rivalries into our league setting and I expect them to have an immediate impact. Every team to join the MACHA in our first ten years has improved talent-wise and received more exposure on the ACHA scene. These teams are no different. Admitting TCNJ and Rowan is a great way to begin our second decade as a league."

"Princeton had a tough year," Schriber commented, "and we came to a mutual agreement of associate membership. Princeton is an original, founding member of the MACHA and they are a valued member of the league to this day. This situation will allow them to be affiliated with the MACHA on a level they are comfortable with so they can rebuild the program's roster strength and join us back as full members as soon as they are ready."

"This move today is drastic but I expect it will give our league a legitimate shot of placing even more teams at the ACHA regional tournament next year and in the future."

ROWAN PROFS ARE 2008 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

The Rowan University Ice Hockey team became the only team to win a championship for the school this year by winning the Great Northeast Conference title in stellar fashion. Being down by two goals twice, the Profs beat rival College of New Jersey by a final score of 5-4.

This season was one to be remembered as hard work and dedication from the start made it all possible to get over their finals loss last year and win it all now. The future is bright for this young group as there are only two seniors graduating. Preparations have already started for next year.

We want to thank all the parents, fans, sponsors, and supporters for all their dedication this year. It is also a distinguished pleasure to thank the coaching staff on their hard work and preparations all season to give Rowan their 1st title. Also a great thanks and appreciation to our greatest general manager and finally to all the players! Thank you everyone.

Rowan tops TCNJ in the Finals!

The championship game featured #2 seeded Rowan Profs against the #1 seeded College of New Jersey Lions.

In the opening minutes of the first period, Rowan maintained a strong pressure in the offensive zone however allowed TCNJ to quickly change that momentum by taking control and scoring the first goal. Rowan looked a little nervous trying to avoid mistakes and making complicated passes. TCNJ quickly added another goal to go up 2-0. Rowan being in this situation before stepped up their tempo and started putting chances on TCNJ's goaltender who played very solid overall. Eventually, freshman forward Colin Davis skated through the defense and netted his first goal of the game to draw the Profs within one goal.

In the second period, Rowan couldn't get anything started in the first ten minutes and allowed TCNJ to add to their lead with another goal letting the Profs be down 3-1. Things were about to change as the Profs regained their confidence and started putting the kind of pressure everyone was used to seeing during the regular season. The team started pressuring the oppositions defense and getting really good opportunities. Davis once again made some nifty plays and got the puck past the goaltender to get the score within one. A few minutes later, the freshman line once again pressured deep in the zone which resulted in a great tipped goal by forward Christian Biscradi. This made it all tied up going to the third period.

In the third period, Rowan came out with steam and energy which kept the opposition’s defense on their toes. The constant pressure deep in TCNJ's zone was rewarded by a goal from who else but Davis who netted his second playoff hat trick in two days. This put Rowan on top for the first time in the game. Although Rowan kept up the pressure, a small mistake made TCNJ capitalize on it to tie it all up at 4 with about six or so minutes remaining in the game. The confident Profs never gave up and with about 2 minutes remaining in the game, Biscardi was taken down while on a breakaway. NCAA rules gave the coaching staff a choice of what they wanted and a penalty shot was awarded. Biscardi was the man who started it and who was going to try to end it. The arena all on their feet saw the calm freshman make an unbelievable backhand move to roof the puck behind the goalie. Rowan never looked back afterwards holding TCNJ to nothing but dump-ins and taking the victory 5-4.

Rowan wins semi-final vs Muhlenberg

Rowan opened the 2008 playoffs by winning their opening semi-final game 9-4 against last year winners Muhlenberg College. Despite the long bus ride and having one of their defensenman out because of suspension, Rowan came out determined with scoring the first two goals. However in the midst of the action, the Profs lost a key player to injury which would result in Rowan being even more shorthanded on the bench. It seemed to spark CW Post as they kept pushing and made it close in the second period before Rowan found its breaks to head to the 3rd period up by the score of 4-2. In the third period Rowan seemed to be a little flat footed but still managed to be up by two late in the contest. CW post with some home calls managed to strike within one late but Rowan kept their cool till the end to win it by the score of 5-4. This Saturday night at 8:15 PM, Rowan plays their final home game before the Holidays against their rival College of New Jersey at Hollydell Ice Arena in Sewell, NJ. The game will be telecast on Rowan Radio.

Rowan sustains an OT lost and rebounds vs Kutztown

Rowan traveled to Lehigh Valley to face Muhlenberg in their second meeting of the season. Although the Profs were victorious in their first meeting, they knew this one was going to be hard. With 4 key players sidelined do to injuries the Profs had to shuffle their lineup. Rowan took two leads during the game, a three goal lead in the second and two goal lead in the third, both times not being able to sustain it by struggling to play four-on-four and continuously forcing plays. The Profs had a great opportunity in overtime with a Fred Brewer breakaway but his miss turned into an odd-man rush the other way with the eventual game winner. The final score in the see-saw game was 9-8.

Their home game against Kutztown University saw another key player leaving the game early although Rowan kept up it's pressure to eventually win the game 9-2. Rowan still down from the night before defeat, they hope to turn it around when they face CW Post on December 8th. Rowan is now 13-2-1-1 overall and 7-0-0-1 in their conference.

Rowan beats LaSalle

Rowan continued their in-conference play by beating visiting team LaSalle University by a score of 13-3. The match was played with lots of grit and enthusiasm on both sides as both teams did not want to give up anything. With the referee's letting a lot of things go, it was unavoidable that the game will played without any problems. A few times during the first period, fighting instigations were attempted by LaSalle with Rowan's players not backing down, although nothing ever developed. By the end of the second period, however, a blow to the head to one of the Rowan players exploded into an on ice fiasco resulting in 2 DQ's for LaSalle and 1 by Rowan. The Profs used their speed and kept their pressure up while continuing their style of play in the third period. LaSalle even down late never gave up and played hard till the very end. Rowan now sits undefeated in their conference at 6-0 and overall is 12-2-1. Rowan has a break over the US Holiday of Thanksgiving, but is back at the end of November to face Muhlenberg and Kutztown.

Rowan keeps on winning

Rowan continues to play well as they complete another 2 win weekend. Friday night, the Profs traveled to Lafayette College to play a non-league game against the MACHA conference team. The Profs came out with a solid victory 12-4 as both teams played well. Lafayette's second goalie played extremely well making some unbelievable saves. Lafayette were great hosts and we hope we will meet again in the future. Saturday night Rowan played a conference game against Millersville University. After last years tough games, the Profs were determined to play a good game. After a slow start, Rowan came out victorious 13-2 now extending their conference record to 5-0 and overall sit at 11-2-1. This was a special game as well for one of the Profs players, Fred Mastrogiovanni, a 42 year old junior goalie who came out to play with 5 minutes remaining allowing 1 goal and making some good saves while being cheered by the home crowd.

Rowan beats TCNJ! Wins at Seton Hall.

Rowan continued their season this past weekend with another 2 wins, now extending their unbeaten streak to six games. Rowan came out victorious over rival TCNJ in OT and extended their conference standings to 4-0. It was an overall great effort for the Profs who had to battle tough officiating in the second period. Rowan took it in to their own hands to tie it up late and win it on a Chris Dellaserra's power play goal. Saturday night, Rowan traveled to play Seton Hall where they won 8-4.
